EVALUATION SERVICES:

I provide assessment services for infants through adults.  Individuals and their families request these services for a variety of reasons including:

     - Identification of learning disabilities

     - Clarification of a diagnosis (e.g., ADHD, Autism, Asperger's)

     - Identification of a developmental disability

     - Better understanding of personality and emotional issues

     - Determination of academic accommodations, including extended time on standardized tests

     - Repeated testing to assess the effectiveness of interventions

THERAPY SERVICES:

At the start of therapy, I consult with the client to establish a plan that outlines the methods we will use for meeting treatment goals.  Depending on the treatment goals, I typically approach therapy from a cognitive behavioral or behavioral perspective.  And, I use the DIR (Developmental, Individual, Relationship-Based)/Floortime model developed by Greenspan and Weider) to conceptualize my understanding of human development.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is based on the assumption that thoughts influence one's feelings and actions.  By making a change in how you think about a problem, we can impact how you feel and how you are likely to behave.  Research has shown cognitive-behavioral therapy to be helpful in treating a range of difficulties (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress management).

Behavior therapy is often most useful for caregivers who want to shape how their children act.  A series of reinforcements are used to increase desirable behaviors and decrease less desirable behaviors.  Studies indicate that this type of therapy is especially useful for addressing behavior problems (e.g., defiance, lack of motivation, aggression).

The DIR/Floortime model focuses on helping individuals climb the developmental ladder.  Through Floortime, the individual increases his or her mastery of language, social-emotional, motor, sensory, and cognitive abilities.  A growing body of research has demonstrated that this approach is helpful for children with autism spectrum disorders, behavior problems, developmental disorders, and language delays.

Central to any therapy relationship is the working alliance.  You should feel comfortable with your therapist; you should feel free to voice concerns, ask questions, and assume an active role in the work.  I think of my style of helping people as educational and collaborative.  Although I bring a specialized expertise to the relationship, I expect us to work together to develop goals and to assess progress.

CONSULTATION SERVICES:

In addition to providing evaluation and therapy, I also provide education and training, research methodology consultation, and statistical support for medical and behavioral research.
